Dear colleagues and friends,
In extending this invitation to you to join us at the 16th International Symposium on High Voltage Engineering, in Cape Town, from the 24th to 28th August 2009, I am reminded of my own journey as a researcher in high voltage engineering and the tremendous role that participation in ISH played in stimulating my work and in providing me with a network of wonderful men and women who willingly served as mentors and guides. There's an African proverb, "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu" (a person is a person because of people) and I, along with many of my colleagues, have realised our potential as research engineers and scientists because of the people we have met at events like ISH.
South Africa has a rich engineering heritage born from the challenges of extracting minerals from the earth but which has grown to address the full spectrum of engineering endeavour. High voltage engineers have had to deal with high altitude, high lightning densities and very high earth resistivities. The large distances between coal fields and load centres have led to long UHV lines traversing a variety of environmental zones. Reliability challenges have resulted in 765kV GIS and cross-border links using HVDC.
ISH was born out of the need for young researchers to share their work and enthusiasm with their peers and mentors - and that remains the goal of ISH 2009.
Jan Reynders
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of ISH 2009.
